Trying to get past writers block

In the book Walking in This World Julia Cameron suggest that all artists including writers should do something every week that have nothing to do with their art.

On Tuesday I went shopping for a new pair of sandals in Birmingham city center.

There was a busking band playing Latin American music. As I danced on the other side of the road the band leader invited me to come and dance with the band.

‘What the hell’ I thought as I dropped my bags danced to the lambada. He joined me and we provided a light moment for the many passers by. I think I also helped to increase their takings.

Late for Lit Fuse

Friday 8th November 2013

I went to see my friend Roy McFarlane in a performance at the Midland Arts Centre (MAC) tonight. I was early for the 8 p.m. start I thought it was, only to be told as I picked up my ticket that the show started at 7.30. Why did I think it was 8??

It was an evening organised by Britain’s leading poetry company Apples and Snakes, and showcased four very different poets.

Watching them I had a yearning to be back on stage, a feeling I haven’t had in a long time. Maybe I’ve been too focused on writing and have neglected performing.

Less time on the phone and I may have made it on time

Thinking out of the box

predencia's avatarWriting Creatively With Spirit

Thursday 7th November 2013

I went to a book launch tonight. Bishop Joe Aldred was celebrating yet another publication. One that encourages us to ‘think outside the box’.

It was a very well attended event. The energy was great, the presenters were respectful of time and there was much humour. Then there was the one about the dead donkey, the ashes in dumplings and the spider in the soup.

I met a friend from Cameroon whom I haven’t seen for a while. He was so taken with my trip there that he’s coming to see me at the weekend to hear more.

There’s something about being in the company of writers that makes me want to write.

Back to the start

Monday 28th October 2013

This last week I’ve taken to my bed more than usual, the result of being exhausted after my Cameroon experience.

2013-10-09 14.02.57When I wasn’t actually sleeping, (which I’ve done a lot of), I’ve been reflecting on the way my blog has been dominated by this ancestral search in the past few months.

Blogging has become a significant part of my writing. I’ve been reminding myself that I originally began the blog to try and trace whether my spiritual development would have any discernible effect on my creative writing.

At the moment I seem to be doing less and less creative writing. I’m trying to regain the drive and passion for the purely creative.

I’ve never seen myself as a journalist, yet I have spent many hours and many thousands of words journaling, both publicly and privately.

If there are any creative writers who also blog I’d…

Cameroon Experience – Reflections – What I will and won’t miss

predencia's avatarWriting Creatively With Spirit

Wednesday 23rd October 2013

Just before I left Cameroon someone asked me what I’ll miss. As I thought about my answer it seemed that most of the things I’ll miss have a counterbalancing thing that I won’t miss.

1.     Cleanliness

I won’t miss open garbage. The way rubbish is dropped on the streets, although it does form a rather interesting mosaic when mixed into to the red mud.

Every first Thursday of the month is ‘Clean-up’ day. I was happy when I heard that it was a day for making the environment more beautiful. But sadly it seemed to only apply to people’s cars, frontages and homes. The communal areas remained neglected.

I won’t miss open urination by men – however much rain there is. Neither will I miss outside toilets. Although I’m no stranger to doing my business outside (years of hiking in Britain) I prefer not to…

Brindley Place Film Festival

Brindley Place Birmingham

Brindley Place Birmingham

The Brindley Place Outdoor Film Festival ended today. I came across it by accident on Thursday when I went to a meeting at the Ikon Gallery. There was a small gathering of people on the steps by the fountains on my way to the meeting. An hour later the fountains had been switched off and the area turned into an outdoor cinema, complete with popcorn, ice cream and hot dog vendors. Lovely that the weather was so good.

I meant to write this on Thursday to give those who didn’t know a chance to check it out, but life got in the way. Maybe you found it anyway. If you didn’t, it’s an annual event, watch out for it next year. As you can see from the listing, it’s a very family friendly event.

May holiday bliss

We’ve just come to the end of a bank holiday weekend where the sun shone for most of the time. It’s amazing how the sun lifts the spirits and makes even the mundane things, like going shopping, weeding the garden and clearing the patio, pleasurable.

View of the sky through the glass roof of my car

I decided to go to Cannon Hill Park on Saturday afternoon, forgetting that the world, his wife and all their children would be there. There was nowhere to park, so I drove to Winterbourne Gardens instead and got their last parking space.

The spot was so beautiful I decided to stay in the car. My car has a glass roof so I could lie on my back and look up at the sky. As I happened to have one of my meditation CDs with me I took the opportunity to do a meditation. With the windows down and the tweeting of the birds loud and clear it was just like meditating outdoors (but without the inquisitive insects).

And then I read a few chapters of Robert Rankin’s The Dance of The Voodoo Handbag and laughed so loudly in places I had to wind the windows up in case passers-by thought me crazy.

It was lovely to stop thinking about spiritual things or writing and just lose myself in a good comedy book. That too lightens the spirit.

Welsh paradise

A perfect day in Welsh retreat paradise. Woke up after ten hours sleep, meditated for an hour, and wrote journal. Went to gym and worked hard. Swam, hung out in the sauna and Jacuzzi – 3 hours in the leisure complex. Checked out the snooker room for spirits (it used to be a mortuary – long story) Ate. Stared out of the window for hours at the rabbits, squirrels, crows and robins. Watched DVDs and drank wine. Bliss!

The Birmingham meet

Young people in Victoria Sq

Young people in Victoria Sq

Hundreds of young people from across the country converged on Victoria Sq this afternoon just to meet up and say ‘hello’, to meet new people they’ve probably only spoken to on line or to just meet new people. A lot of them looked like fourteen/fifteen year old. I chatted to a few. Very warm and pleasant.
