Carib Grill

Thank you Groupon for leading me to the Carib Grill in Moseley on Good Friday. Although I’ve frequented Zen, the Mind, Body, Spirit store across the road in St. Mary’s Row, I’d never looked to the other side to see the brightly coloured Carib Grill.

Our booking was for6.30 p.m.and I was ravenous by the time I arrived. The welcome was warm. A most delightful Barbadian waitress showed us to our table at the front of the restaurant where we had full view of the kitchen, and the two chefs busily jerking chicken, stewing steak, frying dumplings, and oiling down Matagee. She also helpfully named the islands of the flags draped around the restaurant.

We began with the rum punch and fruit punches, (I’m still on the wagon so I can’t tell you the strength of the rum but my dining partner said he could certainly tell it was there), and waited a comfortable while for our starters of Jerk shrimps and Bajan fish cakes. My partner, unfamiliar with the nuances of Jerk quickly requested a jug of water as the pepper and pimentos hit the back of his throat and got intimately acquainted with his taste buds. Supported by the water he managed to put away the substantial portion of shrimps. My Bajan Fish Cakes were a little on the rubbery side but very flavoursome, and I could have happily have had them without the barbeque sauce.

My ackee and salt fish main was sheer bliss, as was the rice and peas and side order of fried plantains. My partner’s curry goat was equally delicious. My only criticism is that  I was still chewing my fish cake as my main was being placed in front of me.

I had no space left for a desert but my partner found some for a Rum Baba with vanilla ice cream, and another rum punch. Me, I settled for a guava juice and taste of the Rum Baba, while relaxing to the dulcet tones of Gregory Isaacs and Beres Hammond who played on a loop for the three hours we were there.
